Barn Dance
A Gallimaufry Barn Dance.
It’s a dance evening for everyone to join in. Sarah will be your
caller and she will explain each dance and then help you through it. We usually start with very easy dances and then they
get a bit more complex as the evening goes on.
You dont need to be a dancer,we will explain all you have to do.All
we want you to do is have a fun night and make it an a lively and enjoyable event. It won't matter if you haven't done this
sort of thing before - just turn up willing to get up and have a go.
What else might happen during the evening?
During the event we will have plenty of breaks, when we will play some
tunes or sing a few songs. We play all types of music everything from folk and jazz to classical and European music.Pete sings
all sorts of songs everything from Irish and Scottish songs right through 60s music. There should be enough dancers to
allow you to sit out one or two dances. There's usually a break half way through the evening for some food or just to rest
a bit.
If you want to hear the band you are welcome to come and see us at a gig or listen
to our Cds.
You are welcome to come to any of our gigs, that way you can see what
we do and make sure it’s what you have in mind.
We get most of our gigs from recommendations and we are rebooked plenty
of times. We sometimes put on our own barn dance events and welcome the general public to these

with all types of music.
GALLIMAUFRY WORKSHOPS
Gallimaufry are Sarah Marks, Pete Rimmer and Roger Gardiner, all accomplished musicians
rich in a unique musical heritage and a passion for playing and sharing music.
Together they spread their musical
wings very wide, encompassing jigs and reels from the British Isles to the gypsy dances of Hungary and Romania and the rhythm and blues from across the Atlantic
and bring their lively and individual school workshops to you.
Gallimaufry will guide you though some of our traditional country dance steps inspire the children
to have some great ideas for their own songs and lead those learning to play instruments in exciting improvised music making
sessions.
We are very flexible in our
approach and programming and would be happy to meet with you personally to discuss ideas for our workshops in your school

Lots of people ask us about the word
GALLIMAUFRY
A hotchpotch, jumble or confused medley. This word has been around since the sixteenth century, is still in use, but isn’t
particularly common today. It’s one of those terms sometimes trotted out to give a literary feel to one’s writing,
or spoken in a facetious tone for a quick laugh. Its origin is uncertain, though it could have come from the French galimafree,
which might have referred to a kind of sauce or stew. Support for this comes from its earliest sense in English of a ragout
or hash, to which the current meaning is obviously a figurative reference. “So now,” a writer lamented in 1579,
“they have made our English tongue a gallimaufry, or hodgepodge of all other speeches”.
